Updated 13 November 2011: This post will no longer be updated. I'll continue the discussion at the new Kindle Touch entry.

Updated 28 September 2011: New Kindles! Starting US$79! This will really shake things up. I just preordered the Touch!

Updated 14 May 2011: I've just received the new Kindle with Special Offers. It's only USD$114; pictures below. I've also got a second Kate Spade Kindle case to go along with it.

Updated 24 February 2011: New Kindle advertisement, "The Book Lives On."

Updated 25 January 2011: My Kindle lighted cover has stopped working. Click here to read the refund story.
Updated 19 January 2011: Digital Life has a cover story on e-readers and the Kindle. There's just one thing. Hotspot Shield VPN is mentioned but I don't recommend it for the time being. (click = big)

Updated 17 September  2010: I'm getting reports from folks who are having problems with the Hotspot Shield VPN; it's not working for some reason. Do consider an alternate VPN. Amended buying procedure.

Updated 6 September: I received my Kindle 3! Updated price and took some new pictures with comments.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
The book is one of the most ingenious inventions of all time. However, the book wasn't something that was created in one day. It has evolved continually starting with papyrus in Egypt then to Chinese scrolls then to movable type with the Gutenberg press. And it's now digitalised in the form of portable reading devices that allow you to read e-books. The best selling reading device now is the Amazon Kindle.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos just announced that sales of Kindle e-books have overtaken hardcover sales, and will overtake sales of paperbacks in 12 months. I just find that really astonishing. It's one of those things that you've heard about: things happen so fast in Internet time, and we're right in the middle of this revolution.

The next iteration of the Kindle is the new Third Generation device which is now USD139. (I bought the Kindle 2 for USD359 in May last year. What a price drop!) I've just pre-ordered the WiFi-only Kindle 3 after it's first shipment was sold out even before the product is released at the end of this month. I am now queuing in the second wave and will update this post when that happens.

Here are some reasons I've chosen the Kindle 3 instead of other reading devices:
Best online shopping company in the world: Even before the arrival of the Kindle, I've always bought books from Amazon. They are always reliable, have a great selection and website with lots of customer reviews.

Excellent support: Amazon's customer service support is legendary in the industry. I've called them a few times myself and have consistently received the highest level of service. It offers 30-day money back and price drop guarantee and I believe e-books are returnable too.

Best reading device: The Kindle is meant to 'disappear', a design philosophy that is very rarely adopted by product designers and suggests a sublime understanding of how it should be made and positioned. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use. The latest generation has eInk that improves contrast by 50%; very close to real paper, so they say. It's also probably the most user-friendly e-Ink reader.

Largest selection of books: The Kindle store doesn't claim to have every book there is, but my impression is that it does have the largest selection. I recently bought The HP Phenomenon and it could only be found in the Kindle store.

Best Laugh: One of the main reasons why Amazon is my top choice is due to CEO Jeff Bezos. (Just like how Steve Jobs is god to the fanbois lol) Jeff has one of the heartiest laughs I've ever heard. Most reports also suggest that's one of the most down to earth billionaires ever. I am happy to do business with folks like him.

In the meantime, if you're interested to see what the fuss is about, Bezos has a wonderful interview with Charlie Rose and it's really worth a look to see what makes Amazon tick and where the book market is going in the near future. The full 40-minute interview is here.

How to buy a Kindle in Singapore
Here are the steps I use. Do note that Amazon doesn't officially support Kindles in Singapore. There are instances where buyers were found to be not from 'authorised countries' and their accounts were disabled. Your mileage may vary. Caveat Emptor. Other than that, things have worked really well for many local Kindle users.
  • Create an Amazon account if you don't already have one.
  • Go to the Kindle page and buy yourself a Kindle. It will be automatically linked to your Amazon account. I prefer the WiFi-only version rather than the 3G+WiFi version. The added 3G isn't really necessary because worldwide surfing isn't guaranteed. Also, additional costs will be incurred for the transfer of documents if 3G (AT&T roaming) is used when there is no WiFi.
  • Ship it to a third party mail forwarder. I use Borderlinx who will then ship it to Singapore. Comgateway seems fine too though I've not tried them myself.
  • When you get your Kindle, you need to register it if it hasn't already been registered. After connecting to wifi at home>settings, register it by filling in your Amazon username and password at home>settings>register.

Some preparatory steps to take before buying books from the Amazon US store
  • Firstly, do NOT buy books using your Kindle's Whispernet/3G/WiFi. Don't buy from Kindle apps too.
  • You need to buy books using your Internet browser on your computer with a VPN installed. Use a VPN such as AlwaysVPN to make yourself situated in the US, in spirit. You may turn it off later when you're done purchasing. I can share my AlwaysVPN account with local Kindle users. Do not use Hotspot Shield; it's known not to work sometimes.
  • Exit your Internet browser.
  • Switch on your VPN. Open your browser.
  • Go to Manage your Kindle at the Kindle product page.
  • Go to 'your country'. Change your country to US if it's showing another country. Use any US address.
  • Buy a gift card with your local credit card, say USD50. Email the gift card to your email address. When you re/ceive it in the mail, apply the gift amount to your Amazon account.
  • Go to your account, 'manage payment options', and erase your credit card info if you have any credit cards associated with Amazon.com . (Do this also whenever you buy something at Amazon using your local credit card.)
How to buy e-books from the Amazon US store
  • Again, do NOT buy e-books (even if the books are free) using the Kindle's Whispernet/3G/WiFi.
  • Ensure that you have sufficient funds in your account. If not, buy more gift cards and apply them to your account.
  • Exit your Internet browser
  • Switch on your VPN, open your Internet browser and go Amazon. Find your book and click 'buy now with 1-click', 'deliver to your Kindle'. If you choose to wirelessly send it to your Kindle, you should receive the book in less than a minute. You can also choose to download the file and transfer it to your Kindle using USB. If asked for the billing address, use any US address. Not that this address will not be used because funds will originate from your gift card balance.
  • Switch off the VPN
6 September update: I've received my Wi-Fi Kindle 3! The cost is USD139 (Kindle 3 WiFi) + USD60 (Kindle Lighted Leather Cover) + SGD 24 (Borderlinx shipping) = around SGD 300. The screen is just totally unbelievable; I can't see the difference between a printed page and the new E-Ink Pearl screen. More pictures below with additional comments. (click = big)

Free Amazon shipping (5-9 days). The shipment arrived at Borderlinx in 4 days, way sooner than Amazon's conservative figure.

The fee charged by Borderlinx was SGD23.42. There were no additional GST, import fees etc. DHL's tracking system is GOOD!

This is quite interesting. First time users of E-Ink will try to peel the instructions sticker from the screen. Problem is: it's not a sticker; it's the screen!

The Kindle Lighted Burnt Orange Leather Cover is a thing of beauty; very well constructed and the light is just fantastic! The price (USD59) is also...uh... quite fantastic!

The browser is fast. Obviously it's meant for casual browsing but it does work quite well.

A comparison  between Kindle 2 and 3. There is no contest: the black of the K3 is really much blacker.

11 September 2010 update
Having used the new Kindle 3 for a few days, I must say that it's wonderful device. Because my first Kindle was a Kindle 2 with no wireless (it's a CDMA device for the US market), the addition of WiFi is making a huge difference.

Firstly, I only need to use the VPN to buy books and the book get transferred wirelessly to the device. Also, if you looking for the 'classics' and wish to use sites like Gutenberg, you don't even need to go to the Amazon store. Just use the browser and directly download the .mobi file into the Kindle and immediately read it on your device.

A reader commented on the use of Calibre which allows you to manage your ebooks and to convert them to the Kindle format. The increase in functionality when one pairs up the Kindle with Calibre is astonishing. Calibre (a bit like the old Palm Avantgo) allows you to push rss feeds into the Kindle magazine format and this can be done wirelessly. It works really well!

23 September 2010 update
A reader sent me two PDF documents for me to try out. My impression of the Kindle reading was that yes, it's technically possible to read PDFs, but in reality, due to the size of the screen, it's not very feasible. After my investigation today, I've come to a rather surprising conclusion.

The screen of the Kindle 3 is so much better than the Kindle 2 that even the tiny words show up very well. Reading PDFs is very possible now! All pictures, click=big. The words are a little fuzzy as I wasn't using a tripod when I took these pictures and the lighting wasn't so good. While standard 'text pages' like these look good, magazine pdfs may not because the pages are bigger. YMMV.

At the bottom of this page, there are some 'missing words' which will appear when we magnify the screen or rotate the screen to landscape mode.

Here we see that the dictionary works on an unconverted PDF document.

Here is annotation in action. Highlight the words, then add your own comment.

28 September 2010update
I've managed to buy a magazine sold at the Kindle store just to test it out. The New Yorker costs USD3 a month so it's quite all right. I believe we cannot use gift cards to buy magazines so a workaround is to use yet another (!) credit card called Entropay. This is a 'virtual prepaid' credit card and the commission fee to 'load money' into it is 5%.

If you're not keen on paying for magazines, an alternative is to use Calibre and download magazines/news websites. So far I'm able to download Reader's Digest for free. Anything that is available for free on the Internet can technically be downloaded as an ebook using Calibre. It's very powerful.

3 October 2010 update
Here are more pictures of the Kindle in strong sunlight (click = big). There used to be a 'page-turn lag' issue but it has largely been resolved with the 3.0.2 software update.

The content here are downloaded using Calibre which is pretty versatile in using RSS feeds and turning the content into 'magazine format'.

Scrabble is a new Kindle game that is a joy to play.

This is Nikon PDF directly loaded onto the Kindle without modification.

1 December 2010 update
Some readers have asked for advice on how to proceed if they bought ebooks without using a VPN and are asked by Amazon to provide proof of residency. You can ignore the email. Going forward, you need to use a VPN and then go to www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle to change your country to US. Please use a VPN when buying anything, free or otherwise, at the Kindle Store. If you don't have one, email me, I can share mine with you.

14 May 2001 update:
Amazon has released a cheaper version of the Kindle 3 with Special Offers. It now comes with advertisements. The good thing is that the ads are completely unobtrusive. The screensavers (example below) are also ads now, and they are interesting because they keep changing! It's the Kindle I'd recommend now.

On the main index screen, some space is used for the advertisments. This replaces the space used by 1 book listing.

If you want to see the advertisement, you'll be brought to another page.

Hi Jeff, I have a friend whom stay in the states. Assuming the VPN fail and we was ask to provide proof of residencey in the US, can i enlist my friend assistance to submit his ID to amazon? Do note that the kindle would be register under my name though. So there are conflicts.

jeffyen said...

Anon, I think what you're proposing won't work. The whole point for verification is for the person to produce an ID that matches the name at Amazon. Doesn't make sense to produce a driver's licence with John Doe's face while the amazon name is Jane Q. Public.

The VPN will not fail. It shall not fail.

Teck said...

Hi, just to share. You can use a US proxy server to access Amazon as well if you don't have VPN. Just google "free US proxy server" and you should be able to find some to use.

Also, to those who travel, I have been on 4 flights so far (to/fro US, plus within US) and they have never asked me to take my Kindle out of the bag, so don't worry, it is not treated like a laptop. But the flight attendant will still ask you to stop using it during take-off and landing.

Hi Jeff,

I understand that I cannot purchase book directly with the kindle. But if I had bought them using the PC with VPN, can I still download them using the kindle?

Thanks,
Tim

jeffyen said...

Tim, yes you can download the books into your Kindle wirelessly. When you buy the book with the vpn on the PC/laptop, choose the Kindle as your 'target'. The book will then be wirelessly pushed to the Kindle if it's in a wifi area.

Hi Jeff

Thanks for this awesome post. Amazon took a little longer to ship the K3 because of the recent holiday season but your instructions worked just perfect.

Incidentally, Borderlinx has a 15% promo code 574328 (good through 31 Jan 2010). This brought my shipping cost to under $18 (no case, just the K3 wifi).

Folks,

Any of you having problem to login to Amazon account? I could not login using my email address and password which I am very sure is the correct email and password. Could it be due to use of VPN to buy ebook though I am not residing in US?

Thanks

jeffyen said...

Thanks anon for the Borderlinx code!

anon2, yes, this is expected behaviour that's sometimes seen. Yes , it's due to the vpn and I sometimes encounter it too. Amazon is doing a good job at making sure we are not phished. Just click on the 'forgot password' link to get a new one.

Anonymous said...

Hi Jeff,

Maybe you or anybody know about this. How many days does it take to ship a kindle package from USA to Singapore with DHL standard shipping?

Handy

jeffyen said...

Handy, I've mentioned in the entry that it takes around 4 days from the time Borderlinx (which uses DHL) processes the package.

claire said...

Hi Jeff

I have followed your instructions
and successfully downloaded some
books with vpn direct to my kindle,
just wonder if I could also
download a copy to my pc as a backup or is this necessary?

jeffyen said...

Claire,
It's unnecessary to do any backup. All your books can be re-downloaded anytime from your manageyourkindle page.

claire said...

Hey jeff

I know i sounded silly but i was just trying to be kiasu, as I remembered reading about
Amazon being able to delete your purchased books remotely, in some instances, so if we could download copies in our pc, then it would serve as some form of backup, wouldn't it?

hi jeff,

it's been a huge help reading this article of yours.

i have a question. regarding this AlwaysVPN that you recommend, do they have some kind of time restrictions?

I mean this 5GB bandwidth is more than enough to buy a lottt of e-books (assuming that we only activated it right before clicking 'Order' button at kindle store). if so, than I can use this 5GB bandwidth for more than 6 months (i guess).

Is it okay to use the account for more than 6 months with just 1 time voucher buying ? or do we need to buy another voucher every some time just to make our account stay alive?

thanks in advance. and sorry if my question sounds stupid :)

jeffyen said...

Claire, the issue of the 'deletion of books' is now behind us. Bezos has apologised, it won't happen again so the point is now moot. What you can do is to just backup the files in your Kindle if you wish to have an archive of your books on your own storage.

Gunawan, there is no time limit so if you want to buy, it'll last you years. Alternatively, email me and I can share my account.

Unknown said...

AlwaysVPN worked perfectly and now i can but e-book.. thank you very much for the tips and everything jeff.

however, sometimes i experience weird things. the icon in the taskbar already turned green and it shows U.S. ip address but when checked with whatismyipaddress.com it is said that i am still using my local provider's ip.

how could this to happen?
please advise.

thx in advance.

jeffyen said...

Gunawan, please stop using and try again later if you see that happening. WIMIPA.com must show a US IP address. Sometimes this happens to me too.

Simon Kan said...

Jeff, you talked about downloading eBooks into the Kindle wirelessly. Would that not expose your Kindle's IP address to Amazon which they could then detect that it is not located in the US? How about Whispersync... would you be able to use Whispersync on the Kindle in Singapore?

Anonymous said...

Tks Jeff for the info, do you know if Amazon has set a limit on the number of kindles that one can register with each account?

Anonymous said...

Oh it's me, claire with the last comment.

jeffyen said...

Simon, it would seem that the check is only made at the time of clicking 'buy' and not anytime afterwards.

I haven't tried Whispersync but I reckon it should work too.

Claire, one can register an unlimited number of Kindles to one account. Also, a book bought for one Kindle registered to one Amazon account can be downloaded to six, usually, other Kindles registered to the same Amazon account.

Simon Kan said...

I am using Kindle App on the iPad, and whispersync works. The iPad is now associated with an account that Amazon has asked to prove US residency. I believe it is because I purchased the book with a SG credit card. What should I do with that request? Since you think the check is during the buying process, then I guess whispersync shouldn't cause any problems.

I would like to clarify the situation around backing up books bought from Amazon.

Unless you de-drm the books from Amazon, keeping the books as backup on your local storage (e.g. computer, portable drive) will only help if you hope to restore to the same device, e.g. after a hard reset. This is because drm books from Amazon are linked to the device's specific ID. If your Kindle broke and you get a replacement, you cannot simply copy the books from your computer back to the Kindle. Those book files will not be readable on the replacement Kindle. You will need to redownload the books from Amazon again to that device.

This applies to any Kindle-enabled device, e.g. iPad, PC or Android phone. The book files downloaded to those devices are not inter-transferrable if drm is active. Books must be downloaded separately for each device you register to your Amazon account.

Hi Kindler Gurus

I has a iphone and ipad but so far has been reading on my kindle. I has be very confident to buy the ebooks using the gift voucher method and the usb from my computer into the kindle.

But how do i transfer the ebooks into my kindle application on the ipad or iphone. As i can see, it will ask me to input my amazon ID and password ... so wouldn't amazon knows the IP address of the mobile devices is not in the USA but in Singapore.

I am very scared to try as i dont want to get myself banned

Pls cry to help. Thanks

Da Froggie said...

Hi Jeff,

Great blog. I have been reading this particular entry of yours since I am really keen to get a kindle myself.

1. How to fake an USA ID? Could I use my friend's real US address to register the kindle?
2. Or could I just use the assigned address by Vpost as my us id?
3. Is there anything I should watch out for now? The last thing I need is to get my kindle banned.

Thank you

Simon Kan said...

Has anyone used Whispersync through the wifi connectivity in the Kindle? Would it cause your account to be banned?

jeffyen said...

Simon, I think you can ignore the request for now. Going forward, just follow my instructions when you buy books. Email me for the vpn. Whispersync shouldn't be a problem.

hapless, I'm interested to know how you managed to get the Kindle app on your iPad.

You transfer your books by using the control panel at www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle. They may know but I believe they only actively check when you buy the book on your PC. The vpn solves this 'problem'.

Froggie, there is no need to fake an ID. Before you buy the Kindle, you need to log into your normal amazon account. The Kindle then gets associated with your account. Just follow the instructions I gave.

Hi Anonymous

From your post

I would like to clarify the situation around backing up books bought from Amazon.

Does that meant Amazon have somehow manage to create a lock in for Kindle users?

jeffyen said...

Anon, I'm not sure what you mean by 'a lock in'.

Each book bought from Amazon is associated with a particular device. One book can be associated with (usually) 6 devices. This is great for sharing books among people you know/family.

The restriction that is seen with regards to book distribution is common to almost all DRMed ebooks.

"Hi Jeff

I tried to leave a comment on your blog but it didnt work for whatever reason so I hope you dont mind me emailing you.

I just wanted to thank you for your instructions on buying a Kindle when living outside of the US. I am from Australia and like most other people wanted access to more books, so I signed up to AlwaysVPN and arranged a US address through Borderlinx (they also give you a UK address).

It was a hassle free purchase. It took 5 days total for me to receive my Kindle from the date I ordered it, although I did pay extra for Borderlinx to express post it but I feel that the extra $6 was worth it.

I have purchased books wirelessly and by saving them to my computer to transfer, always using AlwaysVPN and a gift card as a precaution. Touch wood no troubles and I dont envisage that I will have any if I continue to follow these simple steps.

So again I would like to say thank you, as without the information your blog provided I would be stuck buying the more limited Australian options.

Please feel free to copy this email onto your blog.

Hi Jeff

Just wondering, if we have brought the ebooks and since the ebooks dont work on other devices, how do we retreive the ebooks we brought in the event say the kindle got lost or whatever so reason. Do we need to get a new kindle or could we read directly from the pc? I'm sure most certainely we dont wish to get into a situtation whereby the only means of reading the books are via kindle.

jeffyen said...

Anon, the books we pay for can be read on the PC/iPad/BB etc. Look at the list of Kindle apps that Amazon has.

So if you lose your Kindle, you can go to your Amazon account and download your book into your new Kindle. (There is a new download for each individual device that you have.)

Mitha said...

Hi Jeff,

Thanks so much for sharing your wealth of experience in using Kindle 3, your blog was one of the reasons that I've decided to get the kindle :) I've tried using your method of using a gift card in purchasing a kindle e-book with my Hotspot shield VPN on. However after the purchase, I was asked for proof of my US residency by Amazon! I'm not really sure why the method failed but incidentally I just read on not using Hotspot shield for the time being. Is reliability an issue? Moving forward, should I just abandon the Amazon account that I used and get a new account for my kindle when it arrives? Thanks so much in advance!

Hi Jeff,

I have read quite a number of negative reviews on Amazon about the Kindle freezing, having poor build quality, etc. What is your take on this issue? Is it worth the hassle of having to buy a VPN etc. if there is a significant chance that the unit will be defective?

Thanks.

jeffyen said...

Mitha, HSS doesn't work well so you need to uninstall it. Email me to get it sorted out...

Anon, any product is bound to have negative reviews. On the whole, looking at the reviews at amazon, they are overwhelmingly positive. I'm not worried about Kindle having poor quality etc. because they are the exceptions and definitely not the norm.

The vpn is a separate issue; you need it to buy books. Email me if you need a vpn...

Recently I transfer some Chinese pdf to my Kindle 3. Able to read them for few nights, then yesterday when I try to open one of them, the Kindle took a long time to load, then the Kindle restarts itself.

I still can open Kindle books .azw, but all my pdf books can't open now, English and Chinese pdf. Anyone encounter this before?

hi Jeff, what's the worst case you've heard of, if Amazon find out the buyer is not from US? can't do further purchase? cannot login to Amazon? all purchased books are gone? Thanks.

jeffyen said...

Worst scenario: probably cannot buy more books.

Things we are sure of:
-you won't lose any of your existing books, what's bought for the Kindle can remain in the unit forever.
-you can still log into amazon
-you can still read your Kindle
-you can still sideload your Kindle (load books, texts not bought from amazon)

The use of the vpn prevents the WCS from happening...

thanks Jeff for the reply. if I use Kindle app, any suggestions/precaution that I must take note? to prevent the app from contacting Amazon? the only way I can think of is, disable the internet connection, which is not a good choice if i read it from iPhone. seem I must get either Kindle device/iPad/Android tablet and disable internet connection while reading the books?

Hi Jeff,

I bought my kindle about a month back and had been using it for about a month now, but today, when I tried logging onto my amazon account (with the vpn on), I could not log in and later was sent an email by Amazon.com saying that they had changed my password because they suspect that I may have been subject to a "phishing" scam. The email reads:
As a precaution, we've reset your Amazon.com password because you may have been subject to a "phishing" scam.

Here's how phishing works:

A scam artist sends an e-mail, which is designed to look like it came from a reputable company such as a bank, financial institution, or retailer like Amazon.com, but is in fact a forgery. These e-mails direct you to a website that looks remarkably similar to the reputable company's website, where you are asked to provide account information such as your e-mail address and password. Since that web site is actually controlled by the phisher, they get the information you entered.

Go to amazon.com/phish to read more about ways to protect yourself from phishing.

To regain access to your Amazon customer account:

1. Go to Amazon.com and click the "Your Account" link at the top of our website.

2. Click the link that says "Forgot your password?"

3. Follow the instructions to set a new password for your account.

Please choose a new password and do not use the same password you used with us previously.

Now, the problem is, one of the questions they are asking to identify me and allow me to reset the password is the last four digit numbers of the last credit card I used with them. But as per your guidelines, I'd deleted any credit cards associated to the Amazon account associated to my kindle! So I was hoping that you or someone out there have come across this problem before and offer a solution....if I create a new account, would it be possible to register my kindle under the new account then? Help! And thanks in advance....

Bren said...

(continued from above)....Since they aren't able to identify me from the credit card, the other option given on the webpage is to contact customer service. But I'm afraid of what questions might be asked i.e. proof of residency in the U.S. Really hope you can provide some advice, am really enjoying my kindle!

Hi Bren

Interesting encounter you got. I got quite a no of the "Forgot password" but everything i just click on the link and they would provide a new password. I have yet to encounter asking for credit card information

jeffyen said...

Anon who asks about Kindle app, I'm not sure about the situation for Apple. I don't believe that reading is a problem. Just buy books I guess on the computer and not directly using the app.

Poppy, Calibre is safe to download. There is an issue with buying mags using local credit cards/gift cards because it doesn't work. So the workaround can be Entropay, a virtual credit card. It doesn't matter where you put your books, the central backup/archive at amazon is always available.
Free books can be obtained from various sources. If found at places other than Amazon, they can be directed copied via usb into the Kindle.

Bren, the thing that you got was a routine check/security precaution that amazon does. Maybe you can try clearing your cookies going forward. The solution is just to click 'forget password'. If that doesn't work, you can call up/skype amazon's kindle tech support and they can reset your password for you. Shouldn't be too much of an issue. You need to know a previous credit card that you've used though. You can register another account, but I won't advise that if that is avoidable.

Hi Jeff

Is there any site that allow auto downloading of the Strait times to the k3? That would be cool. Reading your daily papers on k3, which is happening in the states.

jeffyen said...

Anon, unfortunately the full version of the ST can only be obtained when you pay for the service directly from them. I pay around $6 a month I think, it's a great read, mostly for the laughs lol

The ST also has a free but limited version. You can use Calibre to convert the rss feed and export it as a Kindle document.

Anonymous said...

Dear Jeff

Yup, do understand the need for the paid service but just wondering it ST will push the news to kindle or is there any means to do it?

jeffyen said...

Anon, I think it's highly unlikely that ST will do a paid Kindle feed because the Kindle isn't supposed to be officially available locally, and the critical mass just isn't there.

Any suggestions on how to use the Kindle 3 with Wireless@SG?

Hi Jeff

I've referred to your blog quite a lot recently. I don't currently own a Kindle3, but I've placed my order a week ago and am waiting shipping by borderlinx.
Anyway, your content's great! (had to say that). So now I'm taking my next step before my K3 arrives, which is to buy ebooks from Amazon. I understand the buying of books will require a gift card and all, but is there a way to not purchase credits for VPN servers? I went to AlwaysVPN and it costs like USD8.50 for 5GB of data. I guess that's a small fee to pay compared to the K3, but I was just wondering if there was a way to get around without paying for VPN.

Thanks! Happy Chinese New Year to all btw!

Jeff,

Thanks. My kindle finally arrived today. I am so happy. Just want to thank you for your tips and sharing of your alwaysvpn account :D So far so good, I have been able to download stuff to the kindle following your instruction.

Simon, I'm not sure if W@SG will work because I don't use W@SG. The wifi found at home almost always works though.

Nick, the way not to purchase credits is to email me and you can have it for free. It's this site's free service for local Kindle users.

PS: If you're looking for Borderlinx discount codes, you may want to follow Borderlinx on Twitter (https://twitter.com/borderlinx). They release a daily first-to-use one-time $20 shipping discount code. So you can try your luck if you have fast fingers.

jeffyen said...

Anon, I'd recommend Borderlinx; they need a Citibank cc.

You can also use Comgateway or vPost. They require a cc just before they ship your package here.

Ping, thats for the Borderlinx info... they should just release a 'long term' discount code lol

I've already installed the latest update by downloading it manually at http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=200529700#download. It's not a hassle.

Interestingly, I received an email from Amazon yesterday informing me about the new update available and to switch on wifi to get it. This evening, a little while after I turned on wifi on my Kindle, the 3.1 update showed up. Painless.

Just some info in case any of your readers are also waiting for the auto update... Wait for the email!

You can actually use a proxy like ultrasurf to make sure your ip is in USA first. Use whatismyip.com to check your ip, after you verify your ip has changed to a USA one, continue to purchase from amazon. No need to use alwaysvpn.

Hi Jeff,

I am considering between a Kindle 3 WiFi and Kindle DX. Kindle DX seems like it does not have WiFi. Is that right? For the DX, if we would like to use the 3G in Singapore, is it as simple as chaning the SIM card to a subscribed data plan in Singapore?
Thanks.

Anon, the DX doesn't have wifi. You can use the 3G in Singapore, but there are no guarantees. You also shouldn't buy books wireless, do it on your PC with a vpn. The internal sim card is not user-changeable.

Hi Jeff

Thanks for your advice and help. My new Kindle and its accessories are on their way to Singapore :)

I'm wondering if it's safe to buy Amazon ebooks directly on the Kindle via its wireless system (not 3G), after I've turned on AlwaysVPN and successfully masked my IP address on my computer?

That is, buying ebooks without going through my computer at all.

Evon

Evon said...

Just to clarify my above question - i don't mean buying the ebook on my computer than opting to 'push' it wirelessly to my Kindle.

I'm referring to purchasing directly on Kindle wireless - with AlwaysVPN turned on, on my computer.

Will my location be exposed?

Eunice,
It's safe to surf the net on your Kindle. The VPN portion is only for buying books on your computer.

Try to read Jeff's instructions again. It's clear enough where he writes "Firstly, do NOT buy books using your Kindle's Whispernet/3G/WiFi." In fact, he mentions this twice.

My kindle plus cover arrived in 10 days, via Borderlinx/DHL, at night actually which was a pleasant surprise. I also downloaded some books using alwaysvpn without any issue, despite my amazon account having a local email address.

Jeff, I have 2 questions if you don't mind:

(1) Is there a way to save my wifi settings? It appears that I have to rescan and/or manually set up the connection almost everytime, including entering the password.

(2) How do I change the screensaver?

Great thanks for help! - Vince

:) Thank you very much!

Not sure if I missed it somewhere, how do I install word games into Kindle? Like I saw in one of your photos. Is it the same procedure as purchasing e-books? *just curious* Although I know Kindle is essentially an e-book reader.

Vince, it shouldn't be too dim compared to your friend's. Manufacturing variances do exist but if it's obvious that you have a lemon, it's best to contact Amazon.

Trying typing alt+g to refresh the screen.

RKSingh, I'm not sure they sell covers here. There are 2 kinds of covers, one uses the standard Kindle hinges, specific to Kindle. The others are more generic covers that can be used for a variety of devices...

Just wanted to say a big heartfelt thank you to you Jeff for your detailed instructions on getting a kindle and buying books for it.

I got one for myself and another as a birthday gift for my husband. I've used mine for 2 weeks now and totally love it. I do have an iPad, which I also love, but am enjoying the lightness and ease of reading books on the kindle.

My husband has just opened his so am now going to work out how to share books on our kindles.

Thanks again!

jeffyen said...

Anon, it should be ok because the check is done when clicking 'order'. It doesn't matter what happens after that.

Lan13, you can do things this way. Just use one account, maybe yours, to buy books. Add your husband's Kindle into your account by going to www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle

Thereafter, you can share whatever you've bought with his Kindle by clicking on the book and transfering to his Kindle. You can have up to 6 copies per book (usually) shared in this way.

Lan13 said...

Thanks again Jeff. I was debating whether to sign up separately or under my account and decided to follow your advice and registered it under my account. It's brilliant and so easy to share the books.

Dear Jeff,

I just bought the kindle and I love it! Do you know any places in Singapore where I can buy a sleeve or cover? Thanks!

I read that you downloaded Reader Digest from Calibre. But HOw?

Evon said...

Hi Hui Ching,

1)I bought my Kindle leather lighted cover from Amazon at about S$70. From what I know, there's a shop called Video Pro at Sim Lim which sells the Kindle and its accessories. Can shop online too.

http://www.videopro.com.sg/products/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=kindle&x=0&y=0

But the Kindle lighted cover is S$98. And I've not bought stuff from Video Pro before, so not entirely sure how reliable they are.

2) Alternatively, can try Fabrix Cases. Based in Singapore, Fabrix makes cases for digital devices, including Kindle. Interesting fabrics and design. I've bought various sleeves and cases from Fabrix before, and I like their quality.

http://www.fabrixcases.com/

I just bought a Fabrix case for my Kindle 3 - it's on its way!

3) Your third alternative - bring your Kindle along and shop for a sleeve that best suits its size and profile. I've a Kindle-user friend who bought hers cheap at a store called House of Mouse at Suntec City - it wasn't designed for Kindle, but fitted well.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jeff,

Interesting discussion on sharing an Amazon account with another Kindle.

I'd like to share my Kindle books with my husband on his Kindle too - but does the 14-day 'loan' period apply in this case? If I register his Kindle to my Amazon account, that is.

Evon

jeffyen said...

Anon, the warranty is one year. I usually don't buy extended warranty because it's a risk I like to take.

G, Calibre can extract anything that has an RSS feed, for e.g. Just download it and try to play around with it.

Evon, Video Pro is fine, and obviously their stock is from amazon. The price is around $20 more than usual, but I guess it's about right if you consider the overseas postage.

We're not using the official 'lending' function because it's quite limited. Ironically, the other 'loan' method which I mentioned and not marketed as much is much more practical. The 'loan period' is irrelevant in this case. Technically, you can share your book with 6 other Kindles for an unlimited amount of time.

My Kindle has arrived and I've successfully downloaded/purchased books for it.

However, I've been unable to connect to WiFi. Why is that? I don't have WiFi at home so I tried to do it in public places like malls and Mac's. But each time, I was told that I could not connect to the network.

I would be very grateful if you could enlighten me about this issue.

Hi Jeff,

I just purchased 5 books from Amazon.com after I turned on my Always VPN. However, when I clicked on "buy with one click" it said "your purchase will be delivered using the Wispernet" Hoe do I chose not to use this wispernet?? Do you think they will get wise to me and cancel my account?? Thanks.

jeffyen said...

Cheong Cheong, there should be no issue connecting to your home wifi. In public places however, due to technical issues, it may not be possible. In the documentation, "Kindle does not connect to enterprise or ad-hoc Wi-Fi networks (networks that allow peer-to-peer connections without a wireless access point).

Actually, there is no need to use wifi to download books if you really cannot do so. Just send the bought book (at 'manageyourkindle') to be downloaded via USB. Then transfer your book using usb.

Anon, it's OK to let the book be delivered using whispernet. You can not use whispernet by turning your Kindle wireless off. Then use the usb method above. The important thing is to have the vpn activated before you click 'buy'.

Hi Jeff,

The tracking of user accounts will only be when you try to buy books?

thanks for the help.

jeffyen said...

Abhishek, we don't have many clues about what's going to happen at non-US libraries yet. From the info I've seen, Overdrive's tie-up with Amazon is quite different from the currently situation with the Nooks and the Sony readers which use Adobe Digital Editions to allow reading library books.

Amazon and Overdrive seem to be working on a new direction: a Kindle format for Overdrive libraries in a way that one can wirelessly transfer library books to their Kindles. If this is the only way for this thing to work, our local library may not be able to support it. Again, we need to wait till more details emerge.

Shiwei, email me at jeffreyyen@gmail.com and we can carry on from there.

Reve, I'm not in the business of removing DRM and have no idea how that works.

Anon, you don't need the vpn to register the unit, just go to a wifi area.

1. However, I've already successfully purchased and downloaded books from Amazon. Does this mean that I'm registered with them already?

2. I can't manage my kindle when I connect it with the USB cable to the computer. It would only charge. I cannot turn it on when it is linked to the PC. Why is that and how can I rectify that?

3. I don't seem to be able to manage my books by setting up collections. How can I set up collections?

Thanks,

jeffyen said...

Cheong Cheong, when you attach the Kindle to your USB/computer, you should be able to start assessing the Kindle as if it's a portable hardrive/thumbdrive. Use another computer to try if you can't get this to work.

You need also to register the Kindle itself for collections to work.

Home>Menu. Make sure that wireless is switched on and you're in your wifi zone.
Move the 5-way down until "Settings" is underlined and press to select.
Press the 5-way to select "register" from the Settings screen.

Hi Jeff, thanks for your guidance on Kindle!

Just got my Kindle and bought ebooks with VPN etc.

Question I have now is : how to buy ebooks from Amazon UK? I have Amazon US account and US address. I erased my Singapore CC details.

Any ideas? Change Amazon US address to UK address and use a UK VPN?

Thanks in advance!!

jeffyen said...

Max, I haven't bought from the UK store before so I wouldn't know for sure. I guess if the price is quite similar, it's less of a hassle to buy from the US store.

Hi Jeff,

Inspired from your blog, I finally bought Kindle 3 (mine is 3g version). I set it up but I did a mistake of clicking on an archived item (I thought archived items are always available in the Kindle) while connected via WiFi. This attracts Amazon attention, doesnt it? Would I be asked to provide proof of residence in US or some sort of ID later? Should I deregister and register my Kindle into a new account?

Thanks
S

jeffyen said...

Max, I'm not sure how to buy UK books as I've not tried it before. I guess if the price difference is not too great, this may be too much of a hassle...

S, I'm not sure it's a problem because the checking is usually done at the point of purchase. What's in the archive has already been paid for already. Just wait and see.

Dear Jeff,
I just want to thank you about your excellent resources for purchasing Kindle from outside US.

Having a kindle is long time dream for me. I live in Indonesia and I thought, I still need to wait until Amazon can support my country.

But because of your great resources here, I can use Kindle everyday for the last 2 months. I already purchased lots of books.

Thanks for your great sharing and make my dream a reality.

All the best,
Sukarto

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for replying. The archived item was the new user guide pushed by Amazon (coz I think the version on the Kindle was older). That said, Kindle seems to keep in sync with amazon for archived items, collections, settings, etc. Amazon knows where everyone is in case they want to pull a plug.

Cheers,
S

Hi Jeff,

I tried KC's borderlinx code and it is invalid, it is an expired code.
I don;t think that there is any code usable for Borderlinx now.

Cheers for an excellent blog on kindle.

Hi Jeff,

Can I check if I were to purchase a Kindle 3 from the UK store, would it be the same process? I have a friend residing in UK and I will have it sent there but can Amazon UK accept SG Credit card and if i were to purchase gift cards from Amazon US, would it accept my purchase to my Kindle 3?

jeffyen said...

Hong, you need to email me at jeffreyyen@gmail.com

Koshiru, I cannot really comment on buying from the UK because I haven't tried it. Buying from the US should be better as the US store's selection is larger.

Hi there!

Has anyone had the need to send their Kindle back to Amazon for servicing or what not? Any advice regarding that?

I bought my Kindle slightly less than a year ago. This morning it became unresponsive for no apparent reason. I followed the instructions on the website to recharge and perform a hard reset, but nothing seems to work. I'm faced with the possibility of having to contact Amazon to have it repaired/replaced somehow.

jeffyen said...

kevin, were you able to do a reset? Charge a few more hours?

A service call will probably look like the blog entry I did in January when I sent back the lighted cover.

wzhkevin said...

Nope. Not able to hard reset. Tried many times.

When i plug it in to charge, the light turns orange as usual. However, eventually, the light just turns off without ever turning green, and the device remains unresponsive. I've tried this a few times too.

I guess i'm wondering how to deal with the fact that i'm in Singapore. I just _tell_ them i "happen to be overseas" and they'll just believe me? Haha.

wzhkevin said...

Hi Jeff,

Okay i went back and read the comments by people who sent their Kindles back too. I guess it really can be done. How did you send your cover back, though? By regular mail?

jeffyen said...

kevin, there's no need to tell them where you are. It won't be asked. They may ship you a new one so you may want to have a mail forwarder account such as borderlinx, vpost, or comgateway ready...

Take a look at this:

Hi Jeff,

I sort of goofed up. I bought my Kindle with my clearly Singaporean account but registered it under another one that i use for all US transactions. Obviously my order number would be under the Singapore account then. I think the Kindle specialist i spoke to guessed what was going on. I didn't even have to tell him i was in Singapore.

The good news is, if he did guess it, he apparently chose to turn the blind eye. After going through the process of trying to revive my Kindle, and deciding that it was well and truly dead, he told me he'd ship me a new one without me having to even suggest anything. It was very pleasant, and very easy. He even offered to try to ship it to my Singapore address, though that didn't work out.

The call took about 20 minutes. And cost less than US$0.50 worth of Skype points. Most of it was taken up trying to revive my Kindle. Of course, i'll probably have to pay quite a bit more to have it forwarded to me via ComGateway. Anyway, i guess it all turned out well, so...

Long comment. Including more information than strictly required just in case somebody lands in the same situation and decides to search the comments.

I'm wondering if anyone knows a good way to search my own purchased kindle books. As many others, I bought a lot of free books. Now there are just too many of them. I cannot find a way to search through my own library in both kindle and amazon website. I prefer doing so on the web, because there should be more features. For example, how can I filter just the 5 star books I bought?

jeffyen said...

Kevin, I think amazon's consistent good service is quite wonderful...

Anon, it's easy to search your books.

On the Kindle: go to Home, type your book name, don't need to spell out everything. Press 'right', and 'search my items'

On the web, go to www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle

Put in your book name in the autocomplete search box.

Dear Jeff,

I read that you recently purchased a kindle with special offers.. I've just purchased one myself a few moments ago and I just want to ask about how I can go about actually "purchasing" these special offers (like the ones with gift card offers).. is it via the wireless connection on the kindle? would it be safe to use an SG credit card to purchase these offers without amazon detecting that im from SG?

Thank you so much for your time, looking forward to receiving the kindle and for your response! :)

Hi Jeff,

Just wondering how Entroopay works. Do you need to make it a US-address based account for it to work for magazine subscriptions? Or is it simply the fact it is not Singapore-based?

Thanks in advance,

Ken

jeffyen said...

Wynne, if you press 'menu', there's a special page for these offers. It's quite self explanatory. Not all are relevant to us; I haven't tried any myself.

Ken, Entropay is simply a prepaid debit card. I have it because it's not a US credit card to buy Kindle mags. If I use a Singapore credit card, I need to fill in a sg billing address and that doesn't work. Hence, the alternative.

miz101 said...

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for your prompt reply. Does this mean that you can create an account at Entropay using a Singapore address without any problems at Amazon end?

jeffyen said...

miz, that's correct. However, Entropay doesn't provide an entropay billing address. I use my Borderlinx address for that purpose.

Hi Jeff,
Thank You very much.
Really Grateful to you for such a wonderful blog. After going through your blog I decided to get my kindle here in Singapore.

As I dont have any credit card, I bought gift cards using my DBS debit card applied to my amazon account and placed order for it on 25th May'11.

I shipped it via comgateway. and due to Promotion from DBS I only paid USD 4.12 for shipping.

Today I have received my Kindle at 8 PM. I am totally in love it.

Thanks Jeff.

Thank you Once Again.

Hi Jeff
Thanks for all the valuable info. I will be getting my Kindle 3 from my cousin when he come back from US. Am I going to register my account using my PC (Desktop) or the Kindle 3 itself.

jeffyen said...

Simon Tan, you can register with either. In both cases, your kindle should be in a wifi zone with the wireless turned on. It's a straightforward process.

Hi Jeff,

A big thank you for helping so many people with their Kindle.

I have just ask my friend who traveled to US to get me a Wifi only (thanks to your advice) Kindle plus a $50 gift card.

Right now it is still in the box and a bit confuse on the best way to register and buy books. I would like to ask you a few questions.

1) To register I do not have to use a VPN right? Do I have to do the "one click payment method"? I would of course like to purchase books first via the gift card and after that via SG credit card (from what I read SG credit card can only be used to buy card and not the books directly right?).
2) To buy books. I know I need the VPN to do this. Can you provide instructions to use the AlwaysVPN?
3) If I read your instructions correctly, I should only buy books with my PC (via VPN) and never directly w Kindle (via wireless) Right? And when ask by amazon, I need to provide a US address.
4) which SW to use to manage books and file? Or should we just deliver all books to kindle device?

Many thanks in advance!

Roland

jeffyen said...

Roland,
You don't need to switch on your vpn to register the Kindle.
One-click is fine. You should have gift card funds in your account already. If you gift card funds run out, top up by purchasing more using your sg credit card.
-For VPN, you need to email me. jeffreyyen@gmail.com
-I don't use any software to manage my books, just Amazon's 'manageyourkindle' feature.

Hi jeff, i am getting a kindle3 soon :) i have many ebooks in pdf form on my com and would like to know what are the better ways to read the pdfs. Should I use any kind of software? Is there anyway to resize the texts AS WELL AS make the images fit nicely into the small screen of my kindle?

Hi Jeff,

this is very useful information. I am planning to buy a kindle. A few questions : When we buy a kindle on amazon it asks for the country of use. What should we specify there ? Do you still recommend going for the wifi only option or is the 3G + wifi better ? How can we get the VPN connection ?

AVM said...

Hi Jeff, some more questions : What about the product warranty ? Is it covered in Singapore ? Any other specifications to consider ? How does one contact you besides this blog ?

Thanks.

jeffyen said...

AVM,
-Say you are in the US if they ask. I don't remember this happening.
-I'd still recommend the wifi version.
-email me at jeffreyyen@gmail.com for the vpn
-product warranty will be honoured, it is covered in the US (which is where you 'are' situated.) I've a January blog entry which describes what happened when my case stopped working.

Hi Jeff,

I just set up my Kindle but I cannot see any books to buy.
I went to Kindle storefront, selected Books, selected All Books(70), and it shows "0 titles" and "No items found"!

I tried selecting one of the Editor's pick, and it says "Not Currently available". Same message for all other books selected. What can be wrong?

Here is my set up process:
1) Registered a New amazon account
2) Reedemed and Applied my Gift card to the new account.
3) Turn on Kindle, registed it via my home wireless.

Question:
1) Do I have to set up the VPN before buying any books from my giftcard?
2) I registed both with a Yahoo.com.sg email. Is that the reason I cannot buy any books at all?

Thanks.

jeffyen said...

Roland, you're not seeing books because you may not have chosen the US store. But before you can do this, you need a vpn, which you can get by emailing jeffreyyen@gmail.com . Thereafter, just follow my instructions in this blog entry. Your sg email has no bearing on this issue.

Hi Jeff,

I'm asking my friend to help me get kindle 3 in us but does he need to my amazon account to buy?

Thanks,

jeffyen said...

Ivan,

There is 'buy this as a gift' option that he will tick so that the Kindle will not be registered to this account. He doesn't need to know your account; you'll register it youself when it arrives.

Hi Jeff,

I'm wondering if there's a way we could purchase games from Kindle US store into our Kindle 3 safely by Wifi in SG? Say, we purchase the game while on VPN and have it transfered to the Kindle device directly. And will it be ok to do the same to e-books from Kindle store?

Thanks for your advice and tips!

Anonymous said...

Hi Jeff,

Thanks for the fast and helpful reply.!

BTW, Can i surf the web using the WIFI? will amazon notices that i'm actually surfing from other country?

And what other functions does kindle 3 offers? does it have a notepad? does it allow using to edit on microsoft word files?

Regards,
Ivan

jeffyen said...

delta, buying games work the same way as buying ebooks. Yes to all that you've written. Follow my instructions on the blog entry.

Ivan, you can surf, there's no issue doing that with wifi. But the Kindle is not primarily for surfing. A notepad for simple notes can be bought. It doesn't do MS word. The Kindle is razor-sharp focused on reading.

Hans said...

Hi Jeff

I am based in S'pore and just purchased a kindle (it's still shipping on its way here)... and think I just made a boo-boo already! After happily purchasing 8 e-books, Amazon's sensors tripped and asked me to verify my country of residence. Turns out that I didn't have a VPN turned on then...

Is there any way to restore this? From your earlier posts, it seems like I would need to (1) get a VPN and turn it on; (2) then change my country settings.

Does it also mean I won't be able to buy Kindle apps at all, even after if I do manage to rectify the country settings issue?

Thanks!
Hans

Hi Jeff

Would like to ask you on the experience with (Kindle with Ads)

If you reading an ebook will the ads surface?

Does the latest kindle work with Epub format

Cheers

jeffyen said...

Hans, email me at jeffreyyen@gmail.cocm

Bryan, ads never appear in books themselves. I'd recommend getting the K3 wifi with ads.

It doesn't work with ePub. However, it is trivial to convert unprotected ePubs into Kindle/mobi format using Calibre.

Tricia said...

Hi Jeff,

I was about to purchase my K3, but there is this drop box that requires me to select my country..

"To ship Kindle outside the U.S. view important information specific to your country. Select your primary country of use."

So I am wondering which country do I select, United States?

jeffyen said...

Tricia, please read the steps given carefully. You're not supposed to ship them overseas. You need to ship them to a US address: a mail forwarder service such as Borderlinx or vPost. Your country is US.
