- 10th April: I'll be hiking in Australia for 2 months so may not answer questions that quickly.
- 28th February: New Kindle Paperwhite ads just got released last week.
- 14th October: I just received the Kindle Paperwhite and Leather Cover. It's plainly the best Kindle ever made. There seems to some reviews which mention defective screens, hopefully that's just a minority of the huge amounts of Kindles sold. Mine looks gorgeous! It took 11 days from the package leaving Amazon to reaching Comgateway to reaching my house. The shipping was USD17. Total cost is around S$215 including shipping via Comgateway (or S$165 if you don't buy the cover, which is not recommended.)

Every year at this time, I worry that E Ink e-readers will be gone, taken over by the attractiveness of LCD screens found on tablets. Last year, Amazon launched the Kindle Fire, a fork in the Kindle brand that threatened to do away with the E Ink version if it didn't do as well as expected. It now seems that that's not happening at all. Amazon does have a long-term investment in E Ink e-readers for one simple reason: it provides the best reading experience and looks just like a book. So today, we have a new model, the 5th generation Kindle Paperwhite!![]() |

- Create an Amazon account if you don't already have one.
- Go to the Kindle page and buy yourself a Kindle. It will be automatically linked to your Amazon account. I prefer the WiFi-only version rather than the 3G+WiFi version. The added 3G may not be really necessary because worldwide surfing isn't guaranteed even though it does work in many places. Also, additional costs will be incurred for the transfer of documents if 3G (AT&T roaming) is used when there is no WiFi.
- Ship it to a third party mail forwarder. Borderlinx (Citibank credit card required, go to 'get a virtual address') and Comgateway (go to 'get my US address') are excellent. They both use DHL.
- When you get your Kindle, you need to register it if it hasn't already been registered. After connecting to wifi at home>settings, register it by filling in your Amazon username and password at "home>settings>register".
- Because Amazon doesn't officially support Kindles in Singapore, there were instances where buyers were found to be not from 'authorised countries' and were asked to provide proof of US residency before they could buy books again. To be safe, use a vpn described below.
- Firstly, do not buy Amazon ebooks directly from your Kindle device or Kindle apps, not even free books.
- Buy a gift card with your local credit card, say USD50. Use the correct, local billing address for this purchase. Email the gift card to your email address. When you receive it in the mail, apply the gift amount to your Amazon account.
- Go to your account, 'manage payment options', and erase your credit card info if you have any credit cards associated with Amazon.com . (Do this also whenever you buy something at Amazon using your local credit card.)
- You need to buy books using your Internet browser on your computer with a VPN installed. Functionally, using a VPN is the equivalent of me giving you an airplane ticket to travel with your Kindle to the US. Use a VPN such as AlwaysVPN to make yourself situated in the US, in spirit. You may turn it off later when you're done purchasing. Click here to download some instructions. The cheapest Alwaysvpn package can last you for years. Do not use Hotspot Shield; it's known not to work sometimes.
- Exit your Internet browser.
- Switch on your VPN. Open your browser.
- Go to Manage your Kindle at the Kindle product page.
- Go to 'country settings'. Change your country to US if it's showing another country. Use any US address.
- Switch off the VPN.
- Do not buy e-books (even if the books are free) with the Kindle device.
- Ensure that you have sufficient funds in your account. If not, buy more gift cards and apply them to your account.
- Exit your Internet browser.
- Switch on your VPN, and check that it's working by going to http://www.whatismyipaddress.com . It needs to show a US IP address.
- Go to Amazon. Find your book and click 'buy now with 1-click', 'deliver to your Kindle'. If you choose to wirelessly send it to your Kindle, you should receive the book in a few seconds. You can also choose to download the file and transfer it to your Kindle using USB. If asked for the billing address, use any US address. Note that this address will not be used because funds will originate from your gift card balance. New: Copy or do a screenshot of this information (the US billing address and telephone number that you used.) You may be asked for it in the future.
- Switch off the VPN.

Very information but I think I pass for the time being. Too much of a hassle. Hopefully it will be offered here officially soon.

Thanks!

I am a Mac user so there is no problem. Check your cable by connecting another device to it and see whether anything appears in Finder?

i just received my kindle paperwhite but upon startup the screen freezes and i can't really see anything.
Even after charging, it still shows the smudged screen.
anyone encountered this before?

Did you use a forewarder like comgateway or borderlinx? You can try claiming insurance?
Thanks for replying. sighs, was excited to get it today but the screen.. *shakes head*
Yea i used comgateway to ship it. So should i claim insurance from comgateway or amazon for replacement?
A couple of questions though, the wireless at home is turned on all the time, do I have to set my Kindle to airport mode so that it doesn't accidentally connect? (I'm probably being paranoid?) :)
Also, is it okay to leave Whispersync on?
Thanks so much!
can it be use for kindle paperwhite?
http://i46.tinypic.com/2hwzhjb.jpg
I switch my wireless off most of the time to save battery life.
Steven, yes you can use that charger. As it has DC 5V output, it will work.
Just wondering, can I setup VPN on my ipad nested of desktop? So even with a US VPN, it is still preferable to purchase kindle ebook via gift card?
Please help.
Very disappointed of not able to read ebooks on ipad.
Other than kindle ebooks, do you have any other recommendation for ebooks in Singapore?
Thanks, Jeff...
Amazon is the default place to get ebooks. The kindle won't read book formats that are protected from elsewhere. Check out the free books best sellers list to find numerous freebies.
"Go to 'country settings'. Change your country to US if it's showing another country. Use any US address"
If I put my comgateway address, will that be alright?
tian
The only concern I have is that if there's a problem with the Kindle and you need to return it, would the US amazon store recognise from the serial number that it's a Japanese set and thus refuse service? If so, this can be a problem unless you are able to communicate with the Japanese amazon store.
My guess is probably that they won't go to such an extent to scrutinise this point, but I just don't know.
But of course if you know Japanese, there will be really no problems getting a Japanese unit.
Thanks for your help here, I just bought a kindle paperwhite but after following your instructions on downloading and getting the VPN, I could not get it to work. it seems some configuration problem here, when you say close internet browser, i am assuming close the safari completely right? so what do i do now if i can't configure the vpn? can i still purchase books for my kindle?
If you're still having trouble, ignore the vpn and buy normally. Tell me again if you do indeed get 'found out'.
Need help. Unfortunately I have already gotten myself into a mess. Was busy downloading free ebooks thru wifi on my PW kindle & was "spotted". They have sent an email in the lines of verification of address to reactivate the account. Can you help? What can I do now? The US address I have put is my US office address. If I show them a bill which they requested, they will know that it is a corporate address. Would that be ok?
Many thanks in advance, Em
May i know if i purchase the kindle from japan. What language will the kindle be in?
Thank you
so everything is per normal like i can download the book torrents and transfer them to the kindle like a normal kindle purchase from the states right?
thanks
Just wondering, do you read your Kindle books on your computer too? Does the VPN need to be switched on for this?
Thanks in advance :)
Just stumbled on your blog in a mad bid to find out how to use my kindle PW. Just got one during a trip to the US, but I am a noob, have no idea what to do with it. There is also no instruction booklet.
Will try to follow your instructions closely to see how to get kindle ebooks from Amazon (fortunately someone in the US gifted me with a USD25 Amazon giftcard)though your suggestion to remove credit card information is very helpful (also a good security measure).
One question I have is re: the kindle downloads from Project Gutenberg (http://www.gutenberg.org/wiki/Main_Page). I have been downloading many ebooks from this site to my ipad (pdf version) but I notice they have kindle versions also. Would I need to worry about Amazon 'finding me out' if I just download the kindle version books from PG to my laptop, and then use the USB cable to transfer them to my kindle?
Cheers,
Lin
Julia, yes I have the ability to do that with the Kindle app for Mac. No vpn is necessary. They only check (if they check) at the point of clicking 'buy'.
Lin, actually the removal of cc card info may be an unnecessary step, but I guess there's no harm in doing it.
For any other sources of books, including Gutenberg, feel free to download any book there using usb transfer. Amazon doesn't care about that. They are only contractually concerned about ebooks bought from them.
I am planning to get kindle on my next business trip to US. If I am using my hotel addresses as the shipping address and sg local credit card, do you think I can continue to use this account in future for purchasing of ebook? Example buying gift card and downloading the ebook to my VPN connected PC.
You can still buy books using this account using a VPN. You may not need the vpn, but they may find out.
I own a Kindle Fire and am trying to download apps - but cant seem to do so. Would you have any suggestions? Thanks.
AE
5.3.4 released.
Is there a way we can follow the same process and get the books for amazon on my Kindle apps on ipad?. I managed to create a US account ( while i was in US) and dowload a kindle apps and also purchased a gift card and sent it to my email ID. When i did these in singapore i used VPN express and it was located in US. However i have got an email from Amazon that my ID has been locked as they found discrepancy in the billing address ( which was a US VPOST one) and my creedit card. Any solutions to this?
The problem that you are seeing with the billing address is a separate issue that has raised red flags with the finance department and this is actually a good thing. If you're using a credit card to buy things, the billing address needs to be real, not a made up one. So just do what they ask you to do or correct the billing address. The use of gift cards to buy books as I describe eliminates this sort of complexities as the credit card is not actually used to buy anything.
I have just dropped an email to you on my account on amazon getting blocked trying to buy the e book to my kindle apps on ipad. Let me know if you can help me out with a solution on this.
Cheers
Jay
Thanks a lot for the help. I have a few more questions,
1) If i do what they ask me to do ( which is giving my credit card billing address ( as in the statement)then it would be a singapore one which would hold my account null and void right?
2) Can i use my IPAD itself to purchase it instead of PC/LAPTOP and then sync it to my kinddle app.
3) Do i need to create a new Amazon ID since my previous one is already blocked?
Cheers
jay
1) You need to reply them to give the correct, local, billing address. Your account will be all right. (You cannot buy something with a credit card with a wrong billing address.)
2) Not advisable at this time.
3) No need. Do step 1 and everything will fall into place.
Would you suggest to go for anti-glare screen protector as well? Does it leave on finger-print marks easily? Thanks again.
I'm not sure why you paid so much money for it though...
I just purchased my KPW via an online retailer who ships to SG and i do not have a USA based address. How would i go about filling in the address details?
Quite lost so please advice, many thanks :D
The prices now of eInk devices have dropped to 20% of the prices then, and I feel they are much more durable now. This is how tech advancement work. Moore's Law is very much in play here.
My recommendable is to get a new PW. The difference is really night and day.
Thanks so much for all the info you are putting out. Helps me to understand that it is possible to own a kindle and purchase ebooks AND reduce the strain in my eyes when reading from LCD screens.
There're a lot of posts here and although I have scanned through rather quickly the various questions, I may have missed out some ...
I'm deliberating whether to buy the Kindle Paperwhite. My husband is probably trying to purchase one for me sometime this week overseas. I certainly hope after the initial setting up of VPN, the purchase of ebooks will be rather seamless. I'm an avid reader and my house is like a library now. I thought I should go "e" on a lot of things - save the environment and save space. However, I wouldn't want to invest in something only to chug it one side, collect dust and become a white elephant.
I currently have an Amazon account, but I'm sure it's set to Singapore.
From what I read, I can download the Kindle app on my MacAir & iPad or iphone (?) and the ebooks can be synced with the Kindle and vice versa? I tried downloading the Kindle app (directly from Amazon site) and it wouldn't allow me because my default country is Singapore (even when I don't log in). Is it because I need to purchase the vpn and set my gadgets to US country?
Thanks so much for taking the time to read.
- Liz
Elizabeth, you won't find the Kindle App in the Singapore Apple appstore. You need to have access to the US app store. To do this I think you may need a credit card with a US billing address. I use usunlocked.com for this purpose, not sure if there are alternatives.
Yup, you're right. As I didn't find the Kindle app in the Singapore Apple Store, I went to Amazon website to try to download the Kindle app for my Mac. But i think it recognised my ip address is not located in US, so I wasn't able to do it. I know you have mentioned in your post that I use WhisperSync to sync all the ebooks between Kindle & Mac/ipad right? So does that mean that I don't need to download the kindle app on my Macbook?
I have a US billing address from Vpost (which I assume I can use it). Otherwise, I'll just use my good friend's (who's residing in US) address if that doesn't work.
I really appreciate your blog and prompt answers and detailed explanation of everything. I haven't found any information as useful and detailed as yours, to-date. Thanks so much and yes, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the Kindle Paperwhite as I've also found out that there're websites with lots of free kindle ebooks.
If you want to read books on your Mac, it's advisable to download the Kindle app for the Mac. Alternatively , all your Kindle books are also available using the web browser; https://read.amazon.com/
So in summary. 1)buy kindle ebooks once on a pc/laptop using a vpn.
2) read book anywhere (pc, kindle, iphone, ipad etc.)
I ordered my Kindle Paperwhite (USD119) & Kindle Paperwhite Cover with sleep/wake function (USD39.99) from Amazon website.
After conversion from USD to SGD, the total cost (in SGD, including shipping charges of SGD13.14 to the US address provided by Vpost): SGD222.73
Amazon profited about $12 from the conversion of currency.
I used Vpost calculator to estimate shipping charges from the Vpost USA address (less 15%): SGD21.82
Therefore, est total cost of Kindle Paperwhite + Cover + shipping (via Vpost) = SGD244.60
Now waiting for Vpost to inform & confirm shipping charges from US to SG once they have received the parcel.
Hope this information is helpful ....
I've learned to use vpn when buying from amazon kindle store. They allow you to order 5 more once they discover you've ordered outside the area allowed then cut you off after that...until you fax them a residency card.
Can I ask you though about pre-ordering. Does this mean I have to turn on my vpn the entire time on the day of delivery in order not to get caught? Or is it just needed when I click on that pre-order button?
Thanks.
Anon, pre-ordering does not work as gift cards are not accepted as a mode of payment. Just wait till the time comes and order using gift cards as per normal.
JC, all the problems are trivial and can be solved by following my steps carefully.
I see no reason why that add-on will no work. That API uses Amazon's 'email docs to kindle' feature which works.
If I use the Kindle's feature to share books that I've read, say via Facebook...will Amazon track which country I'm connected to? Tks
I have a UK address and credit card, but I live in Singapore. If I purchase my Kindle from Amazon.uk using my UK credit card, can I then buy books directly from Amazon.uk and Amazon.com using Kindle device in Singapore? Or do I still need to get vpn? And if yes, which once would you recommend? Thanks
The other consideration is the availability of the books that you want.
So for me, the probability that the book I want is unavailable in the US store is less than the UK store, therefore, I prefer to use the US store.
I recently have problem with buying ebook from my kindle touch in Singapore. I used to be able to just buy with one click but now I can't. It keep prompting that I'm buying from a country different from my account. Do you have any recommendation?
How do I configure '1-click' settings for my Amazon account? Should I use a US address or it doesnt matter as long as I follow your instructions and change the VPN at the point of purchase? Thanks.
If your vpn doesn't work, it means you're still being detected as not from the US. Try Alwaysvpn?
LZH, I don't really remember 1-click. You can use a US address because it won't actually be used; you'll have gift card funds instead. Yes, use the VPN at that point in time if you have one.
Just to check... i was able to download eBooks to my kindle apps installed on mac. However, i am not sure if this means i can use the same account when i get a kindle from USA or Japan.
Does the one from Japan uses Japanese or English language? Tenso seem a better choice because they go by deadweight and is nearer to us as well.
Otherwise, what do you think of getting an Ipad Mini and use it for kindle? Can this work? I'm thinking that PW is only monotone and some books that has illustrations will look better in color mode... so thats where i'm stuck. I like PW no glare on the eyes... saw it when someone is using it in Singapore. Very neat ink simple design layout... but when I think of computer books or some books with graphics, i'm stuck.
Thanks
Jano
I just logged into my Amazon account using vpn. However, they were asking for my phone number that ends with 16 as a security question. I cannot remember that I saved a phone number in my account, very unlikely, what's more an unfamiliar 16!
It then says if I don't know the answer, I can sign in with my previously used device (which I already signed in using my old laptop) or call amazon customer service (which I suppose I cannot, right?)
Please offer me solution to this situation.
Thanks
Alex, try erasing your cookies and log in without a VPN first. Switch it on only when you are about to click 'buy now'.
I just got the validation email thing.
If I do not purchase any books from Amazon Kindle store, what will happen after 90 days?
Will my account get banned or something?
Anyway to update you, I successfully shipped my Kindle PPW in from amazon.jp, via Tenso.
Anon, the thing to do is to use a VPN from now on. You can ignore that email and your account shouldn't be affected. I would buy a free book with a VPN just to be sure.
The leather cover is really very nice and good quality.
Btw, this is my first experience with Kindle and I must say it's really close to reading a real book.
The email:
Hello from Amazon.
We are writing because the home country registered to your Kindle account may not match your country of residence. Due to publishing rights, the home country registered to your account must match your country of residence.
To continue purchasing titles available for the United States, please send a copy of your valid government-issued identity card, passport, or a utility bill received within the previous 90 days to our secure fax line:
Within the US: 206-266-1838
Outside the US: (00)1-206-266-1838
For your security, you may obscure the passport, ID, or account number. However, we ask that you do not obscure any portion of your name, your address, or any expiration or statement dates.
Your fax will be converted to a secure electronic image that will never be printed. Once we have completed the verification process, we will delete the image.
If you have moved to a different country, you can update your home country in the Manage Your Kindle section of your Amazon account (www.amazon.com/manageyourkindle):
1. Login to amazon.com/manageyourkindle.
2. Click "Country Settings."
3. Click "Change."
4. Choose an existing home address from your account or enter a new one.
5. Click “Update.”
We may restrict your home country setting if you continue to purchase from the catalog of titles for the United States without completing the verification process.
We appreciate your cooperation.

Since I'm using gift cards to make purchases, is it okay to use my Malaysian credit card details for my 'US' account? They seem to insist on asking for a credit card, despite not needing to charge anything on it.
Before that, use the Malaysian credit card (with the correct Malaysia billing address) to buy gift cards and continue from there.
Hi Not sure what i did wrong...but my order of PW was rejected by amazon japan. This is what i did
1. register Tenso a/c
2. register amazon japan new a/c.
3. ordered PW and cover.
4. set address using tenso as delivery address; billing address the same as Tenso
5. submit order and paid using SG credit card
6. order successful...email from amazon.jp received BUT...immediately a cancellation of order email arrived saying it can only be sold to residents of Japan only.
Note: no VPN was used (could this be a problem? if so which vpn to use then?).
do i also need to clear cookies and what not from browser (used google to order the PW)
any help welcomed....if not gotta order from amazon US. sigh....
Alex
The vpn is not the problem I believe.
What I did was to buy gift cards from amazon Japan and sent it to myself. Then I proceeded to buy the Kindle and case using the gift card funds. You may want to try again.
thanks for your suggestion. is this method 100% foolproof? It'll cost about S$150 to buy a gift card and use it to buy the kindle and cover. Looking at what Joe suggested, wouldn't the billing address and credit card indicate a non-Japanese credential even though the shipping is at Tenso.
Am unsure which is a better way though, sorry for asking again.
btw this was what amazon sent me when they cancelled my order:
"We would like to let you know that the item you have purchased has a quantity limit. Also, we currently sell this item to customers residing in Japan only.
For these reasons, we have cancelled those orders that violate such policies.
Please be warned that further orders for this item in a way that violates these policies may result in the closure of your Amazon.co.jp account."
Alex again
just an update on the issues posted in previous post; the purchase of a gift card then using it to purchase the PW was successful!
some hiccups to note for those who intend to buy from amazon.jp.
when i first bought the gift card using citibank credit card, the order was rejected citing something about verification issues with the bank.
the second time i tried was using a DBS credit card, and this was successful.
I would suggest whichever card was successfully used to purchase the gift card be used as well in the amazon account payment option when registering your local address.
Just my 2 cents worth after a few days of agonising over the cancellation of order and my thanks to jeff for suggesting the gift card purchase method.
Now waiting for tenso to confirm arrival of parcel from amazon.jp.
fingers crossed with anticipation.
Alex
the email was to inform me that the order was cancelled due to the verification issue, and that to try using another card.
Not sure whether its VISA or Mastercard issue, or Issuing Bank issue.
Gift card i think is much safer option.
Alex
does signing up for amazon prime actually helps?
Alvin, I didn't need to sign up for Prime, and still got next day free delivery. The 'problem' with Prime is that if you forget to cancel, the fee will be charged after a month when the trial is over.
Lochana
I bought a free book from amazon, found it inappropriate , so deleted it from my library by going to my manage the account. But it is still in my kindle. Do I have to delete it manually in my kindle and ipad also?
Would my credit card be compromised? Typically, how long do I have to wait for the confirmation email?
KK
KK
Don't worry about fraud, it's not going to happen here.
You can't get a refund for unused gift card funds. You can only use those funds to buy more things from Amazon Japan or just leave those funds unused; they will never expire.
Now, what's the success rate for using gift vouchers to buy kpw from amazon jp? or should i try using my sg credit card to pay?
KK
I receive a gift card in my amazon.us account. After reading your review on the KPW, I am keen to purchase it. But it seems that Amazon japan is selling it cheaper than US. Also I think the shipping fees should be cheaper? Can you kindly advise how I can go about purchasing direct from Japan. Can I actually use my gift card to buy it?
Thank you very much.
CMA
Getting from Japan is cheaper but there are certain risks, the biggest of which is that the order may get rejected as some have experienced. I think using the Japanese's store gift cards most likely solves this problem.
The work flow is:
1) register an account at tenso.com
2) buy kindle and official leather cover from Amazon Japan and send it to Tenso.
3) Tenso will inform you when the shipment arrives, and it will forward it to you.
OK Thank you for your advice. Really respect you for all the help you gave on kindles to everyone. You are really the KINDLE GURU in S'pore. A pity these kindles are not available in S'pore. Hope that someday it will be available so that people don't have to go thru so much hassle just to possess one.
Have a nice day. Best Rgds,
CMA
Here's a new problem. I love the free books selection in amazon.cn. I want to read both English and Chinese books on my KPW.
1. Is it possible to have two registered amazon account in one KPW? I fiddled around and the one function key I could find is to deregister and register a new account.
2. I tried using the kindle app for mac to downlaod the chinese ebooks. But the format of the ebooks found in amazon.cn is ".textclippings". KPW cant read this format.
3. Any suggestions how to deal with this dilemma? I tried writing to Amazon.com but no response :\
Anon, I'm not sure what you mean by 'bookstore tab'. Are you following the instructions on the blog?
Let me know how it goes, I'm interested in the .cn situation. :)
I just ran into this problem today, and I think im screwed bleh.
Need some advice here..I forgot to delete my credit card information after purchasing + applying the gift card amount and went ahead to purchase ebooks. What could possibly happen now? (I do have VPN on though) Thanks in advance!

Any idea if i can ignore it and continue purchasing using VPN etc. Not sure how to get around this and appreciate ur help!
Thank you so much!
I am glad that i stumble upon your website while finding solution for my kindle. I am one of those few that are not so lucky and am 'barred' from purchasing books because kindle found out that i am not a US residence and asked me to show proof via documents. In this case, can you kindly advise what i can do ? register the whole kindle via another new set of email and credit card info or how ? hope you are able to help me out...
thanks very much
and follow the instructions. You can also ask me to help you maintain your account by going to http://www.sgkindleshop.com and using the Concierge service.
I have been reading ebooks with the kindle app on my iPad.
If I buy the PW, can I choose which device I want my future ebooks to be sent to?
Or the ebooks can only to sync to only 1 device at any 1 time? In this case, I may have to deregister the kindle app on my iPad.
In general, each book can be synced to 6 devices that are associated with your amazon account, at any one time.
You choose additional destinations for each book by going to www.amazon.com/myk .
So it means that i can actually on wifi n sync my kindle? Only purchases is best through pc with vpn on.
Bought paper white from a local retailer. Intend to get gift card via US friend. So i can skip the vpn steps. Any issues?
